Off to a great start

Today I took Elly to the doctor to follow up from her Celiac screening blood-work. The doctor already confirmed that the test showed no sign of Elly having Celiac Disease, but it is not uncommon for the lab work to give false negatives. Why they still opt for this as opposed to Genetic testing, I just don't know. So today we discussed my continued concerns and he had more blood drawn to determine a baseline for whatever they test, because some children have a low count and it that's the case with Elly, she may, they may be able to determine Celiac Disease with the lab work. But, her dr also put in a referral for Elly-belle to be seen by a pediatric GI. I think it usually takes a week to get that, so we have some more waiting. I've been asked if I have tried to feed her a GF diet, but it can take 4-8 weeks, if not longer, for the body to adjust and show signs of improvement that I don't want to put Elly or myself through that until I have a definite answer. Plus I think it would be easiest to switch the household to a GF zone because I just can't imagine having to explain to a 2 year old why she can't have the same foods as her sister, when it's never been an issue before. The thought of us becoming completely GF is a tad overwhelming to think about, so I'm trying to just take one thing at a time and not get ahead of myself. I'll keep ya posted as we continue in this process.

Little man had his first haircut this evening (checkout the pictures by following the link on the right to our flickr site). I found some little trimming clippers which I found to be the perfect size for his wee little head. He did pretty well, but definitely is not a fan of clippers. Hopefully as we continue to use them he'll become more adjusted.

I've spent a few months very frustrated that my attempts at dieting and working out have not led any weight loss, and with some new meds, I've actually gained 2 pounds! So, I finally decided to check out the SlimFast option. It seems to have improved from what I remember my parents doing years ago. It seems to be well balanced, encourages healthy meal and choices, watching portions but still allowing one to have 3 snacks, 2 shakes, 1 meal and 1 small meal a day! That seemed very do-able to me so I started last Friday. I've done a great job at sticking with the structure and good choices and have already lost over 7 pounds! That's without any exercise. I do plan on starting a new workout as well, but wanted to give myself the chance to get a solid week of changing my eating habits before adding to that. I am so excited. I know this rapid weight loss will not continue and that it's not healthy to continue so rapidly either, but to just see that by making good choices and sticking with the SlimFast plan I really can lose weight is just awesome. I really needed this kind of motivation.

We're slowly starting to get back in to a more regular groove around here. Between in-laws, speech on hold, and Bible Study ending for the semester, we've been a little out of our norm. But we're flexible and are doing a great job moving back into our routine. We're just doing our best to keep busy, have fun, and enjoy every day our Lord gives us.

Let me throw a few websites your way.

1) www.myfooddiary.com This is the tool that helped me big time after gaining 30 pounds post getting married. It helped me relearn healthy eating habits. Check it out and see what you think. However, if what you're doing is working fine, go for it.

2) http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/ 365 days of using a crockpot. This mom has a child with celiac disease so their family has gone GF and everything she posts is a GF version.

3) http://mammaofmany.blogspot.com/search/label/Gluten-Free This mama has at least one child who's gluten intolerant and was switching over to a GF home. She posted regularly about it, but isn't posting any more. The link is to her GF posts.

Whatever happens with Elly, you'll do fine. You're such a great mama and you're doing an amazing job.

Love you!

Hey - congrats on the progress w/weight loss - losing those baby pounds can be SO frustrating - I felt stalled many many times in the past year. It's always nice to make an effort and see results!!
The family that lives across the street from us does a GF (and dairy & soy - free) diet - so it's rice milk, rice ice cream, and special bread, cereal, etc all the way. All the kids eat the same, and they do pretty well... It does seem awfully overwhelming though - keep at it though - you're doing an awesome job keeping perspective and enjoying your days with your three wee ones!! :)
